SOLAR PURCHASE DECISIONS · 2 MIN READ

Read a solar storm-hardening proposal without buying a slogan

Require named components, drawings, review responsibilities and exclusions behind claims of hurricane readiness.

THE SHORT ANSWER

DOE presents storm-hardening measures as design choices with costs and tradeoffs. A proposal should identify which measures are actually included. [1]

Replace adjectives with specifications

Ask for exact module ratings, racking system, attachment design, fasteners, wire supports, enclosures and drainage provisions. “Storm proof” is not a complete scope.

Identify the design basis

Record site risk inputs, code edition, engineering criteria, roof construction and utility or jurisdiction assumptions. Distinguish verified conditions from items pending site survey.

Name quality controls

Require plan review, substitution approval, torque or installation records, inspections and as-built verification appropriate to the system. Assign each task to a responsible party.

Compare complete cost and exclusions

Separate base installation, resilience measures, roof work, electrical upgrades and financing. Do not infer warranties, performance guarantees or insurance outcomes that are absent from written terms.

Before your next conversation

  • Demand exact specifications.
  • Record design assumptions.
  • Assign quality controls.
  • Compare scope and exclusions.
