Why Duke-connected solar usually stops during an outage

Separate grid-tied solar anti-islanding behavior from a properly designed battery or generator backup system.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Standard grid-tied solar is designed not to energize utility lines during an outage. Backup requires compatible isolation, controls and an energy source sized for selected loads.

Start with line-worker safety

Interconnected generation must respond safely when the grid is unavailable. Do not bypass disconnects, protections or inverter settings to make panels run during an outage. Follow utility and manufacturer instructions.

Identify existing capabilities

Record the inverter, gateway, transfer equipment, battery and backed-up circuits. A solar array and a battery icon in an app do not prove that a particular circuit has outage power.

Build a realistic load plan

List refrigeration, communications, well equipment, medical needs, cooling and other priorities with starting and running demand. Decide what can remain off. Runtime depends on actual use, usable capacity and recharge conditions.

Test the designed system safely

Use the installer’s commissioning and homeowner test process. Keep shutdown and support instructions accessible offline. Treat unexpected behavior as a service issue, not an invitation to change protected settings.
