Duke Florida solar bill versus monitoring: compare the right numbers

Align utility meter dates with inverter data before diagnosing an unexpectedly high solar-home electric bill.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A utility bill measures energy exchanged at the meter; an inverter app may measure array production. Those are different boundaries and should not be expected to match directly.

Label each measurement

Record imported utility energy, exported energy, inverter production and any monitored household consumption. Do not call all four “solar generated.” Note the units and whether the app value is measured or estimated.

Align the dates

Export monitoring data for the exact meter-read interval. A calendar-month app total can differ from a bill that begins and ends midmonth even when both systems are functioning correctly.

Account for self-consumption

Solar used immediately inside the home may reduce imported energy without appearing as export. Weather, new loads and rate changes can affect the bill without creating an inverter fault.

Route the unresolved question

Ask Duke about meter and bill data; ask a qualified solar provider about production and monitoring. Preserve the bill, interval data, screenshots, alerts and recent equipment or meter work for a useful diagnosis.

Before your next conversation

  • Label every data source.
  • Use identical dates.
  • Separate self-use from export.
  • Send each question to the right party.
