THE SHORT ANSWER
A battery changes the electrical design even when the solar panels stay in place. Confirm the current utility and permit path for the actual storage configuration.
Define the operating modes
State whether storage charges from solar, the grid or both; whether it exports; and what it supports during an outage. Marketing terms such as “whole home” do not replace a load schedule and controls description.
Update the electrical documents
Add the battery, inverter, gateway, transfer equipment, protection and backup panel to the one-line and equipment schedule. Match model numbers to manufacturer documents and the installed plan.
Confirm review requirements
Ask Duke and the local permitting authority which submissions or approvals apply before installation. An existing solar authorization does not by itself document a later storage change.
Plan the owner handoff
Keep commissioning results, reserve settings, shutdown instructions and monitoring permissions. Explain which loads can run together and what happens when usable stored energy is depleted.
